What is the procedure of chemical peel and how long does it take?

Chemical peel on an average takes around 15 to 20 minutes. The skin is prepared using a medical degreaser to clean the surface of the skin. Thereafter the chemical agent is applied on the surface of the skin and is kept on the surface for around 4 to 6 minutes. A mild tingling sensation may be felt by the patient during this time. After the requisite duration the peel is neutralized using a neutralizer solution. Thereafter, a recovery healing agent is applied which helps to regenerate the underlined skin.

How much time does it take for the skin to heal after a chemical peel and is there any visible feeling of skin after the procedure?

Mild peeling of skin is usually seen after the procedure and this may last for around 3 to 5 days. Slight redness maybe seen over the skin which my last for around 2 to 4 days.

What are the precautions to be taken after a chemical peel?

A moisturizer should be used for at least 5 to 7 days after a chemical peel to avoid any visible flaking and peeling of the skin. Use of harsh soaps is to be avoided at a gentle cleanser may be used during this period. Excessive sun exposure must be avoided while the skin is peeling and a sunscreen is recommended during this period. Allow the skin to peel off naturally and the patient should be advised not to pick the skin during this time. Use of anti acne creams and retinoid creams which cause dryness of the skin should be avoided for a week after the chemical peel.

You may not always see a visible flaking or peeling of the skin after the procedure. However this does not determine the success of the procedure. With the newer advanced peels, the flaking of the skin happens at a microscopic level and may not be always visible to the naked eye. However the improvement in skin tone and texture almost invariably happens after every session of chemical peel.

What is to be avoided before a chemical peel?

Avoid waxing, use of depilatory creams and Laser hair removal one week before the procedure.
